2020 has been a real roller coaster ride for our country. First, we had to watch our politicians take us through an impeachment, then there was a contagious virus that put us under a quarantine, and now there is violence and identity politics ravaging our country. It makes you wonder-what’s next???
The last couple of weeks I have found it difficult to find words, much less positive topics for Tuesdays. I refuse to allow politics or negativity onto this site, not that it has been a problem. However, no matter what I post, or do not post, there is sure to be a comment about my white privilege. I am appalled at the idea that everything has become black or white. Isn’t that the very definition of racism? Any privilege I have is not due to my whiteness; my privilege has more to do with the family and class I was born in to. I simply cannot change that. What I can change is what I do with it, how I live with my family, and how I raise my son. And those things are none of your business, just like it is not my business how anyone else lives their life.
I believe in peace and in equality, I detest animal cruelty and child abuse. I love this country as I respect other countries, I enjoy learning about other cultures and respect tradition. I believe that two parents are better than one, but understand that it does not happen for everyone, which is unfortunate. I enjoy front porch sitting, bonfires with smores and beer, and cold sweet tea.
I know that I am lucky to be an American and completely understand why people want to come to our country. Even though we are imperfect and flawed, we are the best country on the globe, in my opinion. So, let’s find a way to show the world that we can have peaceful and constructive conversations on difficult topics. As a global leader, we are under the spotlight and need to act like a leader. If we can find a way to coexist, then any other country can do it.
For now, I am going to enjoy the fact that restaurants and shops are starting to reopen in my area this week. The Topic Tuesday for June will focus on the local businesses in my area. They need the exposure and the business. If businesses are opening in your area, I encourage you to go out to dinner, shop in your local boutique, get your haircut in town, and whatever else you can do to support a local business.
Until next week …
